Social Space-Time

Physical space-time means that the length of one meter depends on the duration of a second. There is a quite similar correlation within the social world. The structure of socially constituted spaces (like nationstates or the home) depends on the structure of historicity (the relationship between past, present and future). This is called 'social space-time'.

Whoever constructs time in a linear way (the future depends on the present and the present on the past), constitutes space as territories in a concentric way around a centre (the home). Some people refer to time much more as fragmented episodes. They structure their space of living as a network consisting of many cities. Historicity can be also imagined as eternally repeated present. Such people constitute only small private spaces as relevant for their lifes.

In social sciences we can talk about a concentric-linear, a networklike-episodic and a islandlike-circular constitution of space-time.
